Served as psychologist in a psychology department comprised of eleven psychological associates and three doctoral psychologists. Duties included: evaluate and monitor students identified as high risk for suicide, consult with administration, direct care staff and psychological associates on behavioral management and diagnostic issues, screen referrals to psychiatrists, conduct psychological evaluations, perform various administrative duties within psychology department, serve as acting Director of Clinical Services in director’s absence, develop and present training on various topics, supervise correctional therapy groups and special treatment programs, conduct pre-employment assessments of prospective direct-care employees.

The training year was divided into three rotations. One day per week for the entire year was spent in out patient work at Bastrop Community Center for MHMR, where a caseload of individual therapy clients and one unstructured therapy group was maintained. Also, weekly training seminars were attended (three hours each) where variety of topics relevant to professional psychology were covered. Had approximately four hours per week of individual supervision. Specific descriptions of individual rotations follow.
Rotation I: Acute Care Services - Represented psychology in treatment team meetings, assisted with treatment planning, conducted several full psychological evaluations, and maintained a caseload of individual therapy patients (2 session per week). Served as co-facilitator of a Yalom based inpatient therapy group and also co-led a variation of Linehan’s structured group for persons with Borderline Personality Disorder. Also averaged one to two brief intake assessments per week.
Rotation II: Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services - Conducted full psychological evaluations on latency aged children and adolescents. Had two unstructured play-therapy cases which averaged about 15 sessions each and one adolescent therapy case for 23 sessions. Served as co-facilitator of a Yalom based therapy group for adolescent boys and girls and also co-facilitated “Talk Time,” a structured therapy group for latency aged children. Served as co-therapist in family therapy for three separate families. Attended weekly grand rounds held by psychiatric staff, and consulted with numerous treatment team members.
Rotation III: Split between Neuropsychology and Geriatric Unit. Neuropsychology - Observed and conducted numerous neuropsychological evaluations with patients from various units of Austin State Hospital. Learned many neuropsychological test procedures and participated in case presentation seminars. Geriatrics - Individual therapy with an average caseload of two patients. Co-facilitator of Insight Group, and participated in Reminiscence Group. Served as leader of substance abuse psychoeducational group. Numerous brief intake evaluations, assessing for dementia, depression, etc. Supervised a psychology practicum student from the University of Texas.

Also individual counseling and full assessment battery with client from Substance Abuse Unit and screened several clients in Acute Care Unit for possible transfer to MDU.
